Smoking Room
Smoking Room (2002) was a site-specific installation in that occupied a stairway landing. The stairwell doubled as a smoking room, as the slats provided ample air circulation and of its ambiguous inside/outside quality. I covered the interior faces of the slats on a steel wall in the stairwell with a mirrored film. At night, the red glow from the cigarettes lit up the wall. During the day, the mirrors played with the fragmentation of the view through the slats by reflecting the streets below and interjecting them into the obstructed cityscape.
